What are we to do?
Every day we hear about the tragedies that are happening to Muslims around the world. We watch in the news the violence and dangers going on in Syria, the drone attacks in Yemen and Somalia, and the torture and misplacement of Muslims in Burma, to mention a few. Muslim men, women, and children are dying every day.
Currently, Palestinians are being killed. The weak are the ones who are dying the most. Small children, women and the elderly are dying in large numbers. They have no peace. They have no security. Parents are watching helplessly as their children and babies die in their arms. This is all too depressing. I can’t help but wonder why all of this is happening to Muslims.
Why is it that our countries are in such bad situations?
Since a lot of Muslims have abandoned many aspects of Allah’s laws and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, we can guess that Allah is angry with us. Thus, we have become useless and unable to help our own. Perhaps it is a test. The honest truth is, no one knows.
Whatever the case may be, the main question now is: “what are we to do when we see or hear about the Muslims in other countries who are suffering?”
Do we just give up and lose hope?
Do we say, “Alhamdulillah! This is not happening to me or my family; therefore it’s not my problem?”
A Muslim should never lose hope in Allah’s mercy and help
As Muslims, we should never lose hope.
Our religion teaches us that losing hope and becoming desperate is the way of the Shaytan. No matter what happens, we must remain hopeful in Allah’s mercy.
We must pray to Allah no matter how bad we think our situation is. This is the reason Allah has mentioned what Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, said when the angels came to him with the good news of Allah granting him a son.
They (angels) said, don’t be afraid. We bring you the good news of a boy possessing much knowledge and wisdom. He (Prophet Ibrahim) said, do you give me this good news while old age has overtaken me! Of what then is your news about! They said: “We give you good news in truth. So do not be of those who despair.” He said: “And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except those who are astray!( Quran 15: 53-56)
The verse above shows us the importance of having hope in Allah. We must have high hopes in Allah’s help. After all, Allah has told us in the Quran, how near He is to us when we call on Him.
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. (Quran 2:186)
Likewise, Allah has told us that Muslims are brothers and sisters. This means we cannot simply ignore what is happening to our brothers and sisters in war-torn countries.
Although we are thousands of miles away and therefore cannot feel their pain, we have to try to at least imagine what they are going through. We must help in whatever way we can.
Dua is the weapon of the believer
We sometimes forget what our main weapon as Muslims is.
We think because we cannot provide our fellow Muslims who are suffering with weapons or money, there is nothing else we can do.
That’s not true. We all must remember that du’a is something we can all make. It certainly doesn’t require us to be wealthy.
We only need to make an effort to remember those who are suffering when we perform our obligatory prayers especially during Sujuud (prostration) as this is the closest a slave is to his/her Lord.
Remember to make du’a for our brothers and sisters in Islam who are suffering on a daily basis. They have rights on us. The least we can do is remember them and ask Allah to help them.by
